I'm a post-graduate student at the University of Kent studying an MA in 'Film Studies' and former graduate in 'Film, Television and Radio Studies'. Not only do I have an academic thirst to learn about film, I love to write; about films, short stories, writing reviews and having rants! An avid film collector, spanning over a thousand features from all over the globe (largely on DVD, which means its hard to find space for them!), I am a film lover. Through and through. Yet, my peculiarly obsessional passion lay within the realm of horror. I just can't seem to stop wanting to scare myself shitless - much to my partners disapproval! Having had an upbringing where film had a major impact upon my childhood - notably the fact that my parents were bosom buddies with the guy who ran the independent VHS rental store in my quaint seaside hometown - I spent half of the time I should have been in bed creeping downstairs to hide under the sofa so I could watch the video nasties my parents had chosen. So, you could say 'it runs in the family', and you'd be right! I remember, in my youth, that my parents were training me not to talk to strangers. What better way to convey this than by showing me Stephen King's epic 'IT'. There are not a lot of things that strike fear into my desensitised gut, but clowns - or Tim Curry - is one of them.
Having watched A LOT of horror films from every which way - and no, i can't pick a favourite (a question you are ALWAYS asked if you study film) - I'm on a nascent quest to indulge in the extreme. Horror is all about crossing the line, having a stab at society, infecting its viewers with its ideologies. The genre really is fascinating, and it will continue to be a part of my life until I die a horribly gruesome death :)
